Can collective conditionality improve agri-environmental contracts? From lab to field experiments

چکیده
Individual subsidy payments that are conditional on a collective contribution threshold could provide viable resolution to the insufficient and dispersed adoption of agri-environmental contracts aiming at attaining environmental quality targets. Indeed, in decontextualized laboratory experiment based public goods game (TPGG), Le Coent et al. (2014) offer promising results regarding compared an unconditional (i.e., standard existing schemes). In this article, we propose improve external validity these by transposing lab-in-the-field setting with farmers. To do so, carry out contextualized farmers explicitly mentioning water quality. Our show cooperate even more successfully than students sustain efficient outcomes over time. between-subject comparison, our indicate average group contributions under mechanisms not significantly different. We find is due two behavioral responses (perceived risks initial beliefs others’ contributions) treatment, which have opposing effects cancel each other out. The incentive mechanism thus shows potential as tool for policy since it avoids pay-for-nothing trap without discouraging contributions.

Supporting Private Provision of Ecosystem Services through Contracts: Evidence from Lab and Field Experiments
The free riding incentive that exists in public good provision has been a major obstacle to establishing markets or payment incentives for ecosystem services. The use of monetary incentives to induce private provision of public goods has gained increasing support, including from the USDA Office of Environmental Markets, to help to market ecosystem services provided by alternative farmland manag...
متن کاملNavigation outside of the box: what the lab can learn from the field and what the field can learn from the lab
Space is continuous. But the communities of researchers that study the cognitive map in non-humans are strangely divided, with debate over its existence found among behaviorists but not neuroscientists. To reconcile this and other debates within the field of navigation, we return to the concept of the parallel map theory, derived from data on hippocampal function in laboratory rodents. Here the...
